Cupcakes and Stickers

Mondays always prove to be interesting days...it's my day off with my favorite two year old. And I don't know why, but it often seems like he doesn't want to take a nap. I'd like to think that he just wants to spend the extra time with Mommy. The only problem is that Mommy needs a little break in the day and no nap days make for not so fun evenings.

After spending an hour and a half in his crib with no signs of sleep, I decided to get him up and run some errands (otherwise it would have been a very long afternoon at home).

We started by returning a few things to Old Navy where he was his usual charming self.

Then we decided to go to Starbucks for a treat. Torin was very excited. While walking to the entrance of Starbucks, he kept saying, "treat, treat." I explained that we needed to pick what kind of treat we were going to have. Anyone guess what he chose? That's right. Cupcakes. So we shared a cupcake. I treasure those moments...sitting in Starbucks with my boy and sharing a treat. And what's so cute is that for a few minutes after we left Starbucks, Torin kept saying, "cupcake share."

From there we stopped at Target where I promised him I would get him some stickers (and pick up some prescriptions which was the real reason for the whole trip anyway).

I realized later that after not napping, I took him out for a cupcake and bought him stickers. I can only hope that he doesn't put two and two together.

"Mommy's turn."

Yesterday on the way to school, Torin asked to sing the ABC song. We love to sing songs in the car. I sang it through once with him singing along and then he declared, "Torin's turn." And then proceeded to sing the ABC song all by himself.

Now granted, many of you might not realize that he actually sang it all the way through, including the "Now I know my ABCs..." part but he totally did. I knew exactly what he was singing. And it was amazingly cute.

When he was done, he said, "Mommy's turn." And we did that several more times on the way to school.

There's nothing better than singing songs with my favorite little boy while we drive.

So much joy.

"Hey honey, eat your lollipop."

I am constantly surprised by the things I say that I NEVER in a million years thought I would say to my child. Why would I ever encourage my child to eat more of his lollipop?

I have a very good reason.

Torin got a ring pop in kid's church today. Not only did I let him have it in the car on the way home (yikes!), I actually heard myself uttering the words, "Hey, honey, eat your lollipop," after glancing at him in the rear view mirror and seeing him starting to fall asleep. See, it is critical that he not fall asleep in the car before his nap. If he even sleeps for five minutes, he's deceived into believing he's already had a nap and therefore, usually doesn't fall asleep again.

This is not good. It makes for a long afternoon and a late afternoon/early evening meltdown.

Therefore, the goal is, at all costs, to keep him awake until we get home. Today, I even employed a lollipop in this task. Call me crazy. But also call me successful!

"Bye, nose. Later."

It was either the day of my sinus/nose surgery or the following day that Chris brought Torin into our room so I could say goodnight to him (I was on some pretty good pain meds so some things are a little fuzzy). I said my normal goodnight and Torin responded by saying, "Bye, nose. Later." While laughing was indeed painful, it was impossible not to. Out of the mouths of babes, they say.

I was telling a colleague this yesterday and she shared how a friend of hers keeps track of the funny/cute/special things that her kids do and say and then sends it out to friends and family at the end of every year as a way of sharing what has happened throughout the year.

Hearing this challenged me because I don't usually take the time to write them down. I mean sometimes I tweet them, but my tweets won't be around in 15 or 20 years when I want to remember all the crazy and hysterical things Torin has said. I know I can't count on my memory.

So, I'm dusting off the old blog and am determined to keep better track of this stuff.

Here's to new starts.
